A tale of two widely divergent age-group events unfolds at two equally opposite locations around Escondido in the next few weeks.

 Escondido College and Career Fair

First up for the up-and-coming set is a no-cost Escondido College and Career Fair. That’s scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. on levels two and three of Westfield North County mall. Representatives from more than 100 colleges and universities will paint the mall fantastic with tales of educational advances to come.

College reps will be available to answer questions about entrance requirements, application deadlines, and majors. Representatives also will be there for those interested in community college, trade school, certification programs and military service, according to city of Escondido publicist Michelle Geller.

This exercise in upward educational mobility has almost as many sponsors as schools represented. Sponsors include: Mission Federal Credit Union, Westfield North County, Cal State University San Marcos Extended Studies, City of Escondido, Escondido Chamber of Commerce, Escondido Union High School District, Palomar College GEAR UP Partnership Program, San Diego Union-Tribune and the Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District.

Escondido Community Wellness Expo for Older Adults

Lest we forget the older set, downtown Escondido, specifically the Escondido Senior Center, will be the scene for the 9th Annual Community Wellness Expo. Seniors and fellow travelers will be exposed to a program titled ““Enriching the Lives of Older Adults and Their Families.”

The event will be “providing valuable health/wellness information and resources that support older adults, family members, friends and care givers who help and assist with important life enhancing decisions,” according to Karen Williams, a city of Escondido publicist.

Information, tests and services include:

  • Health screenings provided by community partners including Palomar Health who offer Meet the Pharmacist for one-on-one consultations (older adults should bring all medications), body composition, blood pressure, flu shots;
  • Meet the Registered Dietician/Nutritionist educator;
  • Professional Hearing Associates will evaluate hearing health;
  • Wellness Activities include Pot-A-Plant, Pet Therapy by Helen Woodward Animal Center, Senior Portraits by Palomar Community College, and Chair Massage.

It’s all free, and kicking off with a continental breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., not mention gift baskets and prize drawing continuing through the morning. The city of Escondido and Palomar Health sponsor the event.

Expo activities run from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Park Avenue community Center, 210 Park Avenue. More information is available by calling the Escondido Senior Center at (760) 839-4688.
