Behold the tallest 22 buildings in all the land, or at least Escondido

Looming high above Auto Parkway, Escondido's tallest building, Palomar Medical Center.

Escondido features two high-rise buildings, 36 low-rise buildings, four open-air structures, two masts (poles) and one stadium, according to Emporis, a global provider of building information.

The Emporis top 20 tallest buildings listing hasn’t been updated to include what now rules the skyscape roost, i.e. Palomar Medical Center at 2185 Citracado Parkway and didn’t list the Escondido Police & Fire Headquarters, 115,371-square-feet on 6.6. acres at 1163 Centre City Parkway completed for around $60 million in 2010.

Palomar Medical Center dwarfs all other comers, coming in at a whopping 11 floors, 740,000-square-feet. The medical center features 288 private single-patient rooms, 44 emergency and trauma rooms and 11 operating rooms. The 56-acre campus will expand in phases – up to double its current size – to meet the developing needs of North San Diego County’s growing community. Former number-one tallest building in all the Escondido land was what now is called Palomar Health Downtown Campus, nine 33.46  meters — about 110 feet — nine floors at 555 East Valley Parkway. “As Palomar Health’s founding hospital, Palomar Health Downtown Campus in Escondido first opened its doors in 1950 as Palomar Memorial Hospital with 37 beds. Today, this 319-bed facility provides comprehensive care to more than 22,000 inpatients from San Diego County, each year.”

Now, without further ado, rounding out Escondido’s top tallest buildings.

Next tallest goes residential in the form of Westmont Town Court at 55 East Valley Parkway. The senior living facility tops the sky at five floors, 18.59 meters, about 60 feet from head to toe. Looks like a nice place. It provides “a full spectrum of living options, from independent and assisted retirement living to memory care.” Check it out at http://www.westmontliving.com/.

The next tallest have the same square footage and footprint, so are listed in no particular order. same rings true for numbers and numbers 10-to-14 and 15-to-21.

Looking for number four et al, look no farther than The Grand Professional Building at 300 West Grand Avenue, three floors up and 11.15 meters, 36.5 feet high. The low-rise, if you want to get technical structure was built in 2004. It provides suites just across from Palomar Hospital. The Grand Professional Building LLC, according to Manta, has an annual revenue of 320,000 and employs three people.

Next on the hit list is the Blackstone Building, three floors at 900 Canterbury Place, near the Escondido Promenade, just off Interstate 15.. Built in 2002, it stands at 11.15 meters, same as The Grand. It features 6,878-square-feet with office space available at $2.35 per square-foot a month, according to Colliers International.

Number seven etc. is the building with no name, 1566 East Valley Parkway. It’s a warehouse made of steel, same footprint at the previous contestants. Wharton and Associates handled the architecture. The building cost $1.7 million with construction started in June 2004. Valley Rose Self Storage is a major tenant there. Move over Viva Zapata, next up is Villa Escondido, an affordable housing  senior living facility at 511 East Grand Avenue, built for $6 million in 2000, R L Davidson Inc., architects. It features 412 units with 63 studio apartments, 48 one-bedroom apartments and one n-site manager apartment.

Numbers 10 to 14 each settle in a two floors, around 7.44 meters, 24.5 feet high. These include at a wood building housing a doctor’s clinic at 129 North Cedar; Escondido Fire Station No. 1 at 310 North Quince, a warehouse at 3661 Sunset Drive, a warehouse at 2110 Enterprise Street, a parking facility at 1163 North Centre City Parkway and Fire Station No. 7 at 1220 North Ash Street.

Numbers 15 to 21 come in , pretty much like your house, at one story, about 13 feet high. These include a warehouse at 421 North Midway Drive, Regal Cinema at 350 West Valley Parkway, a parking facility at 910 Park Villa Place,a parking facility at 1358 La Honda Drive, a parking facility at 3951 Sierra Linda Drive, a wood building housing a doctor’s clinic  at 662 Tranquility Glen.
