Channelling Steven Sondheim and James Lapine, Valley Center Middle School thespians stage “Into the Woods Jr.” for four shows only in March.

The enchanting musical experience is scheduled to take the middle school stage at 6:30 p.m. Friday March 11 and March 18, and 2 p.m. on Sunday March 13 and March 20.

Into the Woods first premiered on Broadway in 1987, after its debut in San Diego at the Old Globe Theater in 1986.  The music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim and the book is by James Lapine.

The VCMS production is produced by Rich Horne, VCMS teacher and directed by Toni Montross, parent volunteer with musical direction by Laralee Beck,VCMS/VCHS music  teacher.  Together this hardworking cast and crew of 34 students have logged more than 2,400 man-hours preparing for this show.

“Due to the amazing talent and skills within this group of students, this show is proving to be even grander than when we first began planning it,” Horne said.  “We are proud of this production and the fact that, each year, the VCMS spring musical gives students the opportunity to learn about the stage, musical performance and teamwork. We hope the community will come out and support their hard work.

Steven Sondheim and James Lapine have woven the plots of some favorite fairy tales to create a single, even bigger one with Into the Woods, Jr. The audience will enjoy the humor intertwined in the tellings of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Cinderella, their princes and witch, and the Baker and his wife. These characters are all busy with their own fairy tales, but each possesses one ingredient for a magical potion. The Junior version brings a happy ending to the stage.

Tickets are $7 at the door with proceeds supporting the ongoing Spring Musical Program for VCMS. The show is in the VCMS Multi-Purpose Room and flowers, raffles, candy-grams, and meal items will be available. The school is at 28102 North Lake Wohlford Rd, Valley Center.

The spring musical is a self-funded, after-school event each year so efforts at raising money this year will seed the following year’s musical.  Donations and support are greatly appreciated.
