People (and bodies of water) behaving badly — Valley of Discovery edition

And away, the 21-year-old innocent gunshot victim goes.

Night time was not the right time to party early Thursday at the normally quiescent San Marcos cul-de-sac in the 600 block of Helmsdale Road, off Kirkwall Drive near Palomar College.

An intimate gathering of about 10 people erupted in an argument that led to gun shots, injuring a 20-tear-old female bystander as two men grappled over a loaded pistol. One man pulled out the handgun prompting another man to struggle to grab it away, police said.

Party guests said a 21-year-old San Diego man, later identified as Rufus Runnels, fired the gun around 3:30 a.m.. San Diego County sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Deese said Runnels was taken into custody and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and other weapons-related charges.

The scene of the early morning melee was anything but chill, according to accounts. A man in his 60s who lived at the home ran outside during the struggle and called 911. While telling dispatchers about the fight, a gunshot was heard on the line, dispatchers said.

As deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect ran away along with several party guests who never returned. Some guests remained and cooperated with deputies, eventually identifying the suspect.

The suspect, for some reason, ran back to the house and and eventually cooperated with deputies, who were surprised he returned to the scene of the alleged crime. One deputy said it wasn’t unheard of “but was a little bit odd that somebody runs back into the home” after such an incident.

The woman sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the upper thigh. She was transported to Palomar Medical Center.

The investigation was continuing.

Lake San Marcos, we have a problem.

Often idyllic Lake San Marcos got a rude broken sewage pipe awakening this week.

Don’t blame the lake, blame the broken sewage pipe.

Lake San Marcos was rendered unusable Wednesday when a broken pipe spewed approximately 60,000 gallons of sewage into the otherwise pristine body of water.

The offending sewer line emanated fro a lift station at 1495 Via Entrada Del Lago. The rupture occurred around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday with the spill per se contained around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, according to San Diego County officials.

Repairs and clean-up continued through Wednesday with the lake closed to the public and posted with warning signs.

Water samples eventually proved clear again and the lake was re-opened to all who would enjoy its pleasures Wednesday afternoon.
