Family fun: kids museum, farm-nursery expo

San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum gets its cute on at last year's annual fall family festival.

Family fun for everyone on Sunday, Nov. 5

Looking for something fun to do with the entire family?

Think of it as a kind of community barn building with the museum being the barn and the community doing the building.

San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum (SDCDM) is hosting a full day of the good stuff, otherwise known as the Seventh Annual Fall Family Festival. For all those many years, the museum has endeavored to bring the community together in the spirit of fall to raise funds to benefit the Museum’s educational exhibits and programs

Be sure to set your clocks forward before heading out to the museum at 9 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, and depending on your brunch plans, be ready to fun it up until 3 p.m.

Here’s what gives, according to Sara Wacker, APR — and dunno what APR means:

“The Fall Family Festival will feature a petting zoo and animal education, live music, SDCDM’s Mobile Children’s Museum, Carnival Games, a Bubble Party, Food Truck, Beer & Wine Cash Bar for Adults, and much more.

“The ticket cost for the event is $5 for adult members, $10 for adult non-members, and  kids under 12 years old are free. The event will be held at San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, 320 N. Broadway, Escondido, CA, 92025.”

Fair enough, you can count yourself among the 150,000 visitors expected this year.

Fun at the Farm and Nursery Expo

Little-known fact, North County is big in the world of agriculture and small family farms alongside urban, suburban and exurban sprawl.

Combine that with knowledge and, yes, fun, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds where the surf meets the turf at Del Mar, and presumably all Breeders cup horses have long gone.

It might not be time for Vin Scully’s Dodgers baseball anymore, but it’s time for San Diego County Farm Bureau’s third annual Farm and Nursery Expo.

Farmers will have the opportunity to network with a wide variety of vendors, visit the educational resource center, and learn about the newest technology and equipment for their farm or nursery.

Attendees will also have the opportunity hear from experts on what to expect from Southern California agriculture in the expo’s seminar series.

Keynote speaker Craig Regelbrugge, Senior Vice President of AmiericanHort and National Co-Chair on the Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform, will be presenting the latest on the politics of immigration reform in Washington D.C.

Other seminar topics include: water supply and runoff regulations, success stories of women in agriculture, new crops of interest to be growing in San Diego, and information on the pests farmers are currently battling and the ones on the horizon.

The Expo is free and designed to support the diversity of Southern California agriculture. To learn more and to register to attend, please visit: www.sdfarmbureau.org/Expo.
