California State University San Marcos is pleased to partner with the City of San Marcos and the San Marcos Fire Department to offer the 14th Annual Because I Care Community Fair 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at the San Marcos Senior Activity Center, 111 Richmar Ave.

The purpose of the Because I Care Community Fair is to raise awareness of and garner support for individuals who provide care to children, young adults and aging adults. This year’s theme is “Vote for Health.” The theme will highlight the importance of keeping health and wellness a priority for both the caregiver and the loved ones they take care of each day.

The fair will include educational workshops, local nonprofit resources, health screenings, flu shots, fun activities for children, live entertainment and food vendors. A prescription drug “Take Back” box and last-chance voter registration will also be available. The San Marcos Fire Department, located adjacent to the San Marcos Senior Center, will offer fire station tours, demonstrations and story time with a firefighter.

Dr. Glenn Panzer, medical director for the Elizabeth Hospice and Chair of the San Diego Dementia Consortium, will be the keynote speaker discussing dementia and advance care planning for loved ones. Other topics being covered include help for veterans in San Diego, home safety and housing options for seniors, as well as caring for the caregiver—mindfulness and support.

This event is made possible by generous sponsors including The City of San Marcos Senior Activity Center, The Elizabeth Hospice, the CSU Institute for Palliative Care at CSUSM, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, North County Health Services and Live Well San Diego.
